The Best Tacos in Greenwich Village NYC
Ryan Watts | February 24, 2026
When you think NYC and food, the first thing that jumps to mind is pizza, bagels, and Chinese food — and for good reason, that’s what we’re known for. But the one thing we’re not really known for is Mexican food, so it can become a little tricky to know where to go when you’re craving some good, authentic tacos. And who doesn’t love a taco, am I right?
The good news is that Greenwich Village and the West Village both have some really solid taquerias and Mexican restaurants. And since I spend nearly every day down there running Greenwich Village food tours, I wanted to share my personal list of where you can find the best tacos in Greenwich Village. These are the places I eat at regularly, visit with friends, and tell all my guests to check out on the tours.
Taquería El Chato
These guys are one of the newest taco spots in the Village, and honestly, it might be my favorite on the entire list. Started originally down in Brooklyn, they opened this spot on MacDougal Street back in 2025, and they’ve quickly become a very popular taco spot amongst locals.
They make everything in-house, including the tortillas, and the prices are pretty reasonable considering the neighborhood, with most tacos ranging from $5 to $6. Expensive by Mexico standards, but pretty much what you’d expect to pay in NYC.
They also have a great selection of drinks, including homemade horchata, which is kind of like a Mexican spiced milk made with white rice, cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla. Sweet and creamy, and my personal favorite.
My personal favorites: Fried Beef Tripa (Tripe) or the Suadero Taco (brisket). They also have a great selection of homemade sauces you can try, ranging from very mild all the way up to really spicy.

The Little Taco House
First and foremost, one of my all-time favorites, and a place I’ve been coming to regularly, is The Little Taco House. This tiny hole-in-the-wall spot has been around for 8 years and is run by Pedro and his team, who all come originally from different parts of Mexico.
They make everything in-house fresh every day. The only thing they don’t make is their tortillas, which is a little unusual. It’s not because they don’t want to, it’s purely because they don’t have the space to do it. However, the tortillas are fresh and imported from Mexico. We actually swing by Little Taco House on our Greenwich Village Food Tour, so I’m a bit biased, but all the tour guides at Tasty Tours NYC who take guests there agree they are genuinely delicious tacos.
What to order: My personal favorite has to be their Al Pastor Taco (marinated pork) or their Camarones (grilled shrimp). Each taco is less than $6, and they are very generous with the fillings. Each taco comes with pico de gallo, onion, cilantro, lime, salsa verde, and the best part, the guac on the taco is free.
Know before you go:
- This place is like a taco truck without the wheels. It’s very small, with 0 seats. It’s purely order, wait, and eat on the street. However, it’s in a beautiful part of the Village, so it’s an awesome spot to do some street food.
- If you’re a fan of Sex & The City, Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment is about a 2 min walk from The Little Taco House on Perry Street.

Tacombi
Tacombi is the taco place that works for almost everyone. It’s approachable, it’s consistent, and it’s great if you have a big group of people trying to eat together. This restaurant has plenty of seating options, and their menu offers far more than just tacos.
It’s also one of the better options for a mixed group. You know the group I mean — one person wants tacos, one person wants something light, one person wants drinks, and someone else is pretending they’re not hungry. Tacombi has something for everyone.
My personal favorites: Birria Taco with homemade consommé, which is a slightly spicy, slow-stewed beef with a rich, savory broth. I also love their crispy Baja fish taco. It’s super crispy and light, very delicate fish, and it comes with a creamy poblano mayo.
Know before you go:
- This place can be crazy busy at times, so it pays to have a reservation.
- The cocktails are also really solid here. I personally love their watermelon margarita. If you don’t drink, they have a great selection of aguas frescas as well.
- his place used to be a garage before they made it into a restaurant. Found that out from one of my tour guests a few years ago.

Tacos 1986
Tacos 1986 is the LA import that people love to debate. Anytime something comes here from LA with a lot of hype behind it, people love to have an opinion before they’ve even tried it.
I finally went here recently, and honestly, the hype is real with this one.
My personal favorite: I’m a sucker for a good steak taco, and Tacos 1986 has one of the better Asada Tacos in the neighborhood. Perfectly grilled steak, onion, cilantro, guac, and salsa. Very simple, but done very well. As you’d expect, they also make all their tortillas fresh to order.
Know before you go:
- This is a small, counter-service setup, not a full sit-down restaurant.
- If you’re a Taylor Swift fan, then Cornelia Street may sound familiar. This is the street the pop star used to live on, specifically 23 Cornelia Street. So if you’re a fan, grab a taco and head down the road and check it out.

Taco Mahal
Taco Mahal is by far the most unique option on this list. They don’t make traditional Mexican tacos. Instead, they take Indian flavors and put them into taco form. What they do here is substitute the classic corn tortilla with Indian naan bread and swap Mexican flavors for Indian flavors.
My personal favorite: Their Chicken Tikka Masala Naan Taco is my go-to order.
Fun fact: The founder of the business, Danikkah Josan, has parents who are Latin and Indian American. When she went into business, she wanted to combine the best of both cuisines, and Taco Mahal was born.

Tacos & Margs
The name says it all. Tacos and margs. What else could you possibly need in life? Tacos & Margs has a great motto, “come hungry, leave tipsy,” and that’s exactly what you’ll do when you come here.
This is a cozy little restaurant on MacDougal Street, and although the margaritas are the star of the show, I still really do love the tacos they have on offer as well.
What’s also great is the prices. Often on MacDougal Street, things can get expensive, like the $38 burger at Minetta Tavern next door, but Tacos & Margs keep things reasonable at about $5 per taco.
My Personal Favorite: I’m usually the type to opt for pork or beef before I order chicken, but their Pollo Yucateco is delicious. It comes on a corn tortilla with marinated chicken thigh, queso panela, and guacachile, and yeah, it’s pretty incredible.

Final Thoughts
Greenwich Village might not be the first neighborhood people think of for tacos, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find some really great ones here. Whether you want a quick street taco from a tiny hole-in-the-wall, a proper sit-down meal with margaritas, or something a bit different like Indian-inspired naan tacos, there’s more variety here than people expect.
The reality is most people walking around the Village will default to pizza, and fair enough, the pizza here is incredible. But if you know where to look, there are taco spots that easily hold their own and are absolutely worth adding into your regular rotation.
Next time you’re wandering through the Village and craving tacos, skip the guesswork and head to one of these spots. You’ll eat well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there actually good tacos in Greenwich Village, or do you need to go to Queens or Brooklyn?
Queens and parts of Brooklyn are still where I send people when they want to make a proper taco mission out of it. Jackson Heights in Queens in particular has some incredible spots. But if you’re staying in Manhattan, and especially if you’re already in Greenwich Village, you don’t need to leave the neighborhood to find great tacos. Places like Taquería el Chato and The Little Taco House are genuinely good and absolutely worth your time.
What’s the best taco spot in Greenwich Village overall?
If I had to pick one, Taquería el Chato would probably be my top choice right now. Everything is made fresh to order, including the tortillas, and the quality is consistently excellent. It’s the kind of place you can go once and then find yourself coming back regularly. What’s the best casual grab-and-go taco spot? The Little Taco House is perfect for this. It’s tiny, there’s no seating, and it’s very much an order, grab your tacos, and eat outside kind of place. It’s right near West 4th Street, which is one of the busiest walking areas in the Village, so it’s an easy stop if you’re already out exploring.
Where should I go if I want to sit down and have tacos and drinks?
Tacombi or Tacos & Margs are both great options if you want a proper sit-down experience. Tacombi is a bit more polished and great for groups, while Tacos & Margs has more of a relaxed, fun atmosphere and excellent margaritas. Both are good options if you want to turn tacos into an actual meal rather than just a quick stop.
Are there any unique or different taco spots in Greenwich Village?
Taco Mahal is definitely the most unique taco spot in the neighborhood. Instead of using traditional tortillas, they use naan bread and combine Indian and Mexican flavors. It sounds unusual, but it works really well, and the Chicken Tikka Masala taco is genuinely excellent.
Where should I go if I want tacos late at night?
Tacos & Margs is one of the better late-night taco spots in Greenwich Village. They’re usually open until somewhere between 12:00 AM and 2:00 AM, depending on the night, which makes it a great option if you’re out late and want something proper to eat. MacDougal Street is always busy at night, and it’s a perfect stop if you’ve just finished a show at one of the comedy clubs or jazz clubs nearby and want to grab tacos and a margarita before heading home.
Are tacos expensive in Greenwich Village?
Compared to Mexico, yes. But compared to the rest of Manhattan, the prices here are pretty reasonable. Most tacos on this list range from about $4 to $6 each, which is fairly standard for NYC. Spots like The Little Taco House and Tacos & Margs in particular offer really solid value for the neighborhood.
What’s the best taco spot near West 4th Street?
The Little Taco House is the closest and easiest option, and it’s only a short walk from the West 4th Street subway station. Taquería el Chato is also nearby on MacDougal Street, so you’ve got multiple great options within just a few minutes of each other.
